The eighties was a decade of change in almost all spheres of life, especially with regard to fashion. One of the major contributing factors which brought about this cultural revolution was MTV. It exploded onto the music scene and changed the way the world perceived music, the television and eventually fashion. Musicians began to be worshiped similar to demigods and they defined the fashion of the period. The fashion was mostly characterized by the individual quest for oneself and their desire to express their creativity and individuality.

Hairstyles underwent some of the most the most radical and significant changes during this period. Some of the most popular hairstyles sported during this period were the Mohawk, big Afros and long curls. Bold new colors were experimented with and resulted in different hair patterns. Men also relied heavily on makeup and were not afraid to sport heavy mascara or even lip colors.

The clothes that men wore saw some major changes in this decade. This decade was primarily responsible for the onset of the stone washed jeans and tight leather pants. Flimsy t shirts, usually without any sleeve and depicting a major rock artist were worn along with the jeans. However more elaborate clothing was also common and involved extensive use of leather and metal chains.

They used a large amount of make up to accentuate their facial features relying heavily on mascara and bright rave toned lip colors.

Though they initially gained popularity in the sixties, they came back in the eighties in an entirely new avatar, shorter and clingier. They were typically made of materials such as spandex or denim and were accompanied at times by leggings or stockings. In addition to the miniskirts, the leg warmers and the zippered stone wash jeans also gained immense popularity during the eighties.

Shoulder pads were one of the primary fashion statements of the eighties, though knitwear, sweatshirts, oversized big shirts also gained popularity. Off the shoulder shirts and three quarter sleeves were also popular along with sweaters worn wrapped around the waist.
